1911- . Yugoslav political writer and
dissident. A former close wartime colleague
of Marshal Tito, in 1953 he was dismissed
from high office and subsequently imprisoned
because of his advocacy of greater political
pluralism. He was released in 1966 and
formally rehabilitated in 1989. Djilas was
born in Montenegro and was a partisan during
World War II. He rose to a senior position in
Yugoslavia's postwar communist government
before being ousted in 1953. His writings,
including the books The New Class 1957 and
The Undivided Society 1969, were banned until
May 1989.
