  1. 1911- . Yugoslav political writer and
  2. dissident. A former close wartime colleague
  3. of Marshal Tito, in 1953 he was dismissed
  4. from high office and subsequently imprisoned
  5. because of his advocacy of greater political
  6. pluralism. He was released in 1966 and
  7. formally rehabilitated in 1989. Djilas was
  8. born in Montenegro and was a partisan during
  9. World War II. He rose to a senior position in
  10. Yugoslavia's postwar communist government
  11. before being ousted in 1953. His writings,
  12. including the books The New Class 1957 and
  13. The Undivided Society 1969, were banned until
  14. May 1989.
